Physical Activity Objective Measures Descriptions
There are several different technologies available for the measurement and assessment of physical activity and energy expenditure.

These methodologies range from complex laboratory procedures such as doubly labeled water to relatively simple methods such as the pedometer. Other techniques used are indirect calorimetry, accelerometers, heart rate monitors, and multi-sensor devices. Each tool has advantages and limitation varying in their ability to capture time, type, and intensity of physical activity. Choosing the most appropriate assessment tool means selecting the tool that will address specific study questions as well as address concerns specific to study participant characteristics such as age or functional ability.
